GALLERY'S HISTORY
Founded in 1986 at the 29 Rue de Seine by Michèle Aittouarès, the Galerie Berthet-Aittouarès is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. From the very beginning, the gallery has championed artists of the New School of Paris and those devoted to gestural expression and line (Pierre Tal Coat, Jean Degottex, André Marfaing, Hans Hartung, Henri Michaux, Georges Noël, Pierre Bonnard, Zao Wou-Ki, Mark Tobey...)
True to its vision, the gallery presents several generations of artists who engage with one another without conflict, championing both modern and contemporary art across all mediums, with a particular focus on Informalism from the 1950s to the 1980s.
In 2000, Odile Aittouarès joined her mother at the gallery, a period that marked the beginning of a new chapter with photography and works by contemporary artists. With rigor and passion, Michèle and Odile Aittouarès have established themselves in the field of photography by exhibiting the works of various artists such as John Craven, Mario Giacomelli, Malick Sidibé, Daniel Frasnay, Jean Dieuzaide, Antoine Schneck, Bertrand Hugues and more recently Letizia Battaglia and Franco Zecchin.
Since the 2000s, they have also championed artists whom they have successfully established on the French art scene, such as Etienne Viard, Jean Pierre Schneider, Marie-Claude Bugeaud, Nil Yalter, Vera Molnar, Yann Bagot, Sophia Fassi, Anne Manoli.
Committed to promoting the art dealing profession, the gallery has been a member of the Comité professionnel des Galeries d’art since 1987, participates in art fairs (Salon de Mars, Art Paris, Drawing Now, Brafa, etc.), and is actively involved in the cultural life of Saint-Germain-des-Prés (including Jeudi des Beaux-Arts and PhotoSaintGermain, both conceived in part by Odile Aittouarès).
In 2014, the Berthet-Aittouarès Gallery moved into a new space at 14 Rue de Seine, at the corner of Rue de Seine and Rue des Beaux-Arts, taking over the former location of Jean-François Aittouarès’s gallery and the site of the legendary Galerie Pierre.
Since 1997, the gallery has published 36 catalogs in conjunction with its exhibitions, collaborating with numerous authors: Annie Le Brun, Marie-Hélène Lafon, Fabienne Dumont, Clotilde Scordia, Jean-Louis Schefer, Pierre Wat, Yves Peyré, Dominique Païni, Edmonde Charles-Roux, Laurent Boudier, Jérôme Clément, Marc Donnadieu, Itzhak Goldberg, Bernard Chambaz, Henri-François Debailleux, Véronique Bouret-Aubertot, Serge Lemoine, Vincent Baby, and Guy Goffette.
