BIOGRAPHY

Mark Tobey, amerikanischer Maler in Basel. @Comet Photo AG
American painter born in Centerville, Wisconsin, in 1890 and died in Basel in 1976.
He traveled extensively, particularly in Europe and Asia, where he discovered Chinese and Japanese calligraphy, which would have a profound influence on his work. Influenced by spiritual thought and the Bahá'í faith, he developed a meditative style of painting, consisting of networks of signs and luminous lines, which he called “white writing.” For Tobey, painting became a universal language, freed from representation, seeking to express the inner rhythm of the world and the spirit.
His works are featured in major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Tate Modern, and the Centre Pompidou.
