BIOGRAPHY
Born in Leipzig, Germany, Hans Hartung (1904-1989) is one of the pioneers of abstract painting. He is one of the fathers of gestural and lyrical abstraction.
After studying philosophy and art history, the young Hans Hartung devoted himself to painting and in the 1930s led a nomadic existence between Germany, Paris and Menorca. Emancipating himself from cubism and surrealism, he then developed his formal language, a network of lines executed spontaneously and with vigor. He perfected a squaring technique that allowed him to transfer his small drawings to large format, a process he used until 1960.
As a German exiled in France, Hans Hartung experienced many vicissitudes during the Second World War. Engaged in the Foreign Legion, he lost a leg.
Tireless researcher, actor of a real formal revolution, Hans Hartung experimented throughout his life with new tools to reinvent his art. In parallel to painting, he practices photography, ceramics and engraving.
In 1960, he was awarded the International Grand Prix for painting at the Venice Biennale. This new decade marks a turning point in the practice of the artist who begins to scratch and scrape the surface of the canvas, to play with drips and splashes of paint.
Close to the sculptor Julio González, friend of Pierre Soulages and of the filmmaker Alain Resnais, Hans Hartung never stopped innovating until his last breath.
Celebrated during his lifetime, he saw major retrospectives devoted to him in Europe and the United States, notably at the Metropolitan Museum in New York in 1975. As an inexhaustible source of inspiration, including for young artists today, Hans Hartung is in all the major modern art museums. He continues to be the subject of numerous exhibitions, including a major retrospective in France Hans Hartung - La fabrique du geste at the Musée d'art moderne de la ville de Paris in 2019.
In 2006, the Berthet-Aittouarès Gallery exhibited him, in the exhibition Hors champs, devoted to his 1970s period. A new personal exhibition took place in 2020.
