BIOGRAPHY

ericportrait_web_edited.jpg

Born in 1974, Éric Antoine is a self-taught French photographer.

During his adolescence, he discovered his passion and put all his energy into exploring the possibilities of film photography. In 2010, he chose the tranquility of a house in the countryside, far from the chaos of cities. He considerably slows down his pace and concentrates on life and nature in their simplest appearances. For 5 years, he only photographed his close environment, within his house. This period of voluntary isolation will give birth to the book Ensemble Seul at the end of 2015.

For several years, Éric Antoine has focused his work on the ancient technique of wet collodion. Each stage is managed by the artist, from the preparation of the chemicals to the final framing, passing through the multiple constraints of a capricious technique. All is a singular alchemy, and the use of primitive photographic equipment reinforces the feeling of absence and tranquility in his photographs. These images on glass, the fragile result of laborious work, firmly counter the contemporary “digital deluge” that Éric Antoine denounces.

Eric Antoine centers his current work on the relationship between the body and the tree, the fragmented body dialoguing with nature. He treats the rendering of materials like a painter. Between flesh and bark. We think of pictoriality. He does not hide his interest in the work of Steichen but, although it is deeply opposed, he also admits his attraction for the radical expression of the new objectivity and a particular passion for Renger-Patzsch. “It's absurd to love both but my heart swings and I question myself every time I should or shouldn't accept the flaws of an image”.

Éric Antoine exhibits his photographs in galleries and museums in France and abroad.
