BIOGRAPHY

Pascal Frament

Pascal Frament was born in 1968, in Paris, he grew up in Meudon.

Pascal Frament's relationship with the image begins, as often, with a spectator experience. Very quickly, he became interested in devices for capturing and reproducing images and sound.

The afternoons spent in the breath and the benevolent roar of the projection machine of the neighborhood cinema, are for him so many primitive scenes. As later the practice of the photo lab and the moment of the appearance of the image in the tank.

In 1988 Pascal Frament joined the Clouet studio in Paris. The teaching of Marie and Christian Clouet is decisive. It gives an additional opening to the scientific and technical orientation of its cycle of secondary studies.

Returning from a trip to the Orient, he entered the Beaux-Arts in Orléans and took a film course with Patrice Rollet, then literary director at the Cahiers du Cinéma. In 1992, he discovered the films of Mekas, Pelechian, Scorsese, Lynch, Antonioni...

Pascal Frament then studied visual arts at the Beaux-Arts in Lyon, where he obtained his final DNSEP. He joined an art media post-diploma section created by Jean-Luc Gervasoni, where he continued his research and experimentation in video and on 16 and 35mm film.

Music, perhaps even more than images, interests him. He develops electro-acoustic devices in collaboration with the composer Jean-François Estager and the Grame (national center for musical creation in Lyon).

In 1995 his work looked as much at the side of the cinema of Marker, Tarkovsky or Godard as at the theory of Marshall McLuhan. He thus creates original media-technical systems that establish an intimate relationship with the viewer, sometimes even physical engagement. Thus, in an installation entitled Immersion, he tries to lower the visitor into a dark box, filled with water and subject to the gaze of six submerged surveillance cameras.

Thanks to a scholarship and a residency, he equipped himself with one of the first lightweight digital video editing machines. It allows him to create sequences at any time from the image banks that he compiles on a daily basis. This marks a turning point in his practice.

In 1999, he met the composer Laurent Saïet around the tribute project Cinéphilie 1, extending this (re)montage technique to films by twelve directors (Lynch, S. Ray, Scorsese, Cronenberg, etc.).

In 2006 he exhibited the environment Here even with the composers Jean-luc d'Aléo, Jean-François Estager and Henri-Charles Caget, at the MAC in Lyon  This is a series of video installations, monumental projections and sound environments developing over 450 m2.

Fascinated by the exploration of consciousness, cognitive disciplines and cosmology, Pascal Frament now seeks to explore the image at the frontiers of the invisible visible #1, #2, #3.

He also directs and produces intimate videos such as Lettre à Hervé and the long-running series “S” season 1.
