Malick Sidibé, was born in 1936. He is a Malian portrait photographer. He is one of the important representatives of contemporary African photography.

In 1955, after studying drawing and jewelry at the school of Sudanese craftsmen, he entered the studio "Photo service" of Gérard Guillat-Guignard with whom he learn photography.

In 1962, he opened his studio in Bamako. He was first, specialized in reportage photography before turning to portraits from the 1970s.

The first African Photography Meetings in Bamako in 1994 allows Malick Sidibé to increase his reputation. He then was exhibited in galleries in Europe (such as the Cartier Foundation in Paris), the United States and Japan.

One year after his death on April 14, 2016, the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art payed tribute to him through Mali Twist, a retrospective exhibition of his most beautiful photographs organized at the foundation in Paris from October 20th, 2017 to February 25th, 2018.
