On the occasion of the publication, by In Fine editions, of the first monograph reviewing the entire production of Antoine Schneck, and within the framework ofPhotoSaintGermain, the Berthet-Aittouarès gallery presents a selection of works by the artist.
Whether he captures faces or scrutinizes the contours of an olive tree, whether he approaches a Formula 1 car or leans over a recumbent figure in the basilica of Saint-Denis, Antoine Schneck is constantly in search of the means that will allow him to grasp otherness, and to make us live this same experience after him. Here, photography is put at the service of a sensitive approach, close to painting in its procedures as in its ends, that of a man who looks at all beings and all things with the humility and the extreme attention of one who learned that you had to strip yourself of your knowledge in order to meet the unknown.
Constructed according to a constant protocol – adoption of a black background, rejection of decor, choice of acrylic glass which gives the work a singular depth – Antoine Schneck's work is as much to experience as to be seen. To be seen, of course, because it is as close as possible, always, that Schneck captures men and things. To experience, even more, because this proximity is the condition of an encounter. The one the artist does with each model watched. The one he allows us to live when we stand in front of one of his works, as in a real face to face with our humanity.
