The artists of the exhibition:
On the occasion of the publication, at Hemeria, of Éric Antoine's latest work,Useful Lies, in which he looks back on his practice over the past five years, and in the context ofPhotoSaintGermain, the Berthet-Aittouarès gallery presents a collection of works by the artist.
Éric Antoine pursues, like a painter of still lifes, the construction of an inner world, where each object, each form of the world, is invested with a symbolic meaning. Photography, with wet collodion, allows him to arrange, but also to give to each motif, thus captured, its thickness and its texture of thing. There is, in the artist's gaze, an archaeologist's sensitivity: this sense of stratigraphy, this way, by looking at the world, of making us feel its thickness, as if in him Time were incarnated. .
Organized in series, Éric Antoine's work oscillates between exploration of memory and dreamlike journey. Whether he sets up his graphic photo room in the forest bordering his house or whether he slowly constructs his images from a set of references known only to him, the artist practices photography as a quest, between loss and appearance. His works are like so many paradises lost, sometimes found.
This new book by Eric Antoine is calledUseful Lies, which could be translated into French as “Les Mensonges Utiles”. It contains a majority of his photographs from the last 5 years and revolves around 5 main series.
