"From the sign, I moved on to writing; from writing, to the line of writing; from the line of writing, to the line", said Jean Degottex in reference to his abstract paintings of 1962-1963.

Using the watercolour wash technique, the artist overlays thin layers of black, walnut stain or baked red paint to create a watered mohair surface that gives an impression of transparency. Then, with a sweeping gesture, he engraves lines that resemble in primitive writings, somewhere between invented ideograms and abstract graphs.

These magnificent paintings by Jean Degottex (1918 - 1988) converse wonderfully with a selection of paintings by André Marfaing (1925-1987), the reference for lyrical black-and-white compositions with cutting effects.

A beautiful dialogue.
