To celebrate its 40 years, galerie Berthet-Aittouarès is displaying a collection of works by 20 photographers who make up part of the gallery's history. Presented during PhotoSaintGermain and the bicentenary celebration of photography, the manifestation exhibits the diversity throughout the works and perspectives championed by the gallery.

Founded in 1986 by Michèle Aittouarès, her daughter Odile joined the gallery in 2000, who established a sector dedicated to photography. With rigour, passion and freedom, Michèle and Odile have contributed to establishing the gallery within the photographic landscape and have notably presented John Craven, Mario Giacomelli, Malick Sidibé, Jean Dieuzaide, Antoine Schneck, Letizia Battaglia and Franco Zecchin.

Reuniting around 40 original prints, the exhibition proposes a walk-through from the 1950's to present day. It reveals choices guided by curiosity and an interest in a wide range of photographic practices: graphic photography, like that of Mario Giacomelli, in a dialogue with painting, but also photography that is humanist and socially engaged, embodied by Jean Dieuzaide and Laetitia Battaglia or a visual artist like Antoine Schneck.

This research, which has been carried out for many years, follows the works of these artists — personal exhibitions, publications, Video reports — have introduced some of them to a wider audience and helped to establish the reputation of others, thereby conferring a status of expertise on the gallery within the photography market.

As the art historian Pierre Wat writes, referring to the approach taken by Michèle and Odile Aittouarès, ‘I am following in the footsteps of this shared passion: to seek, in art, the traces of humanity’
