Letizia Battaglia, Franco Zeccnin - Sicilian Chronicles Until November 29th, 11 am-1pm, 2:30pm-7pm (except Sundays and Mondays), Berthet-Aittouarès Gallery. Part of the Photo Saint-Germain festival. Exhibited this year in Tours and Arles, Letizia Battaglia (1935-2022) is a Sicilian photographer who documented Mafia crimes in Palermo in the 1970s and 1980s.
From 1975 onwards, she worked with her partner Franco Zecchin (born in 1953). The gallery brings together around forty of their photographs (on the day of our visit, Battaglia's vintage prints were still blocked in Italy and facsimiles were replacing them). Bloody bodies of murder victims, arrests, trials, but also everyday life in Sicily... The reporter and the head of the photo department at the newspaper L'Ora worked on the same subjects. He tended to stay in the background, focusing on the composition of his shots, while she was more involved and closer to the people. But both of them denounced the violence of the Cosa Nostra in no uncertain terms.
