Letizia Battaglia et Franco Zecchin,

The Mafia from the front

It is a remarkable love story that unites these two photographers despite their 20-year age difference: Letizia Battaglia (1935-2022) and Franco Zecchin (born in 1953). Both based in Palermo, they use their “weapon,” the camera, to document the ravages of the Mafia. The 1980s were among the darkest years, culminating in the murders of judges Falcone and Borsellino, two months apart in 1992. Raw images—with corpses, shrouds, and dazed widows—are given a timeless quality by the use of black and white. But they also offer an in-depth analysis of society, requiring a keen eye to capture religious processions, political demonstrations, and everyday life. Even children's games—who preferred the role of killer to that of cowboy or Indian, indicative of a deeply traumatized society... All the photos are vintage and prices range from €4,000 to €20,000.
