Zao Wou-Ki/Henri Michaux

China–West

It was in 1949 that Henri Michaux, a painter and poet born in Wallonia in 1899, discovered the lithographs of Zao Wou-Ki (1920–2013), a Chinese painter and printmaker who would go on to become one of the leading figures of lyrical abstraction.

The two artists soon became friends and remained so until Michaux’s death in 1984. By juxtaposing Zao Wou-Ki’s sumptuous ink and watercolour works with Henri Michaux’s mysterious calligraphic landscapes, the exhibition creates a marvellous dialogue between their works, giving pride of place to the mark and the sign beyond the void and the invisible.

Until 31 October.
